Finniss Street, North Adelaide

An ultra-modern two-storey house and swimming pool.

This modernist inspired house sits among Victorian and Edwardian houses and contemporary interpretations of these styles, as well as the 1960s buildings of Kathleen Lumley College. Council initially expressed reservations about the suitability of the modernist design in this context.

URPS prepared a graphic streetscape analysis and character assessment to address Council’s reservations. This assessment demonstrated clearly that Finniss Street’s character was varied enough that new buildings should be afforded flexibility from the form and features of nearby historic buildings. We also demonstrated that the building was consistent with nearby buildings in its scale, siting and materials, and would therefore make a positive and complementary addition to the streetscape.
