A Strengths Based Approach

Working in South Australia and Victoria means that URPS understands the differences between these planning systems.

Three strengths we see in the SA planning system are:

  • The Planning & Design Code is applied State-wide meaning that development assessment is more consistent across all local government areas.
  • The SA Planning Portal is a reliable and comprehensive platform for lodging and managing development applications.
  • Accredited professionals can approve a range of compliant development which streamlines the assessment process.

Three strengths of the Victorian Planning system are:

  • Fine grained planning policies in Planning Schemes often help deliver clever design solutions tailored to the characteristics of each neighbourhood or local area.
  • The VicSmart process which accelerates the assessment of minor and low impact development types specific to Zones.
  • Greater focus on the assessment of development of impact and less need for assessment of largely inconsequential development.

Of course, all planning systems are only as good as the people who operate them.  Our focus is always on building strong relationships with people to make sure that we get the best out of every planning system.
