Mount Barker Hospital

A $320.8 million redevelopment of the existing hospital.

The new state-of-the-art facility is South Australia’s first all-electric hospital. It integrates with the recently upgraded Emergency Department, retains third party commercial leases, and preserves Duck Flat Community Gardens. It also triples inpatient capacity to more than 100 beds, increases operating theatre numbers and establishes a new mental health unit. The existing hospital will remain fully operational during construction with no reduction in on-site services.

URPS added value by convincing the State Commission Assessment Panel, Government Architect and the Minister for Planning that a 5 level building is acceptable where the guidelines speak of 2 levels. We did this by undertaking significant community and council engagement and by facilitating several Pre- Lodgement Panel and Design Review sessions. URPS’ strategic guidance and early engagement ensured approval was obtained in just 4 months.
