Parks and Climate Change Risk Assessment Framework

Climate change threatens the natural, cultural, and recreational values of South Australia’s parks, impacting species, ecosystems, cultural sites, and infrastructure.

To protect these assets, DEW engaged URPS to develop a Climate Change Risk Assessment Framework for Parks. This framework guides DEW staff in assessing climate risks and vulnerabilities, and in developing and implementing effective adaptation strategies. It provides strategic and detailed guidance for park plans and strategies, to ensure sustainable management of South Australia’s parks and reserves.

URPS added value by:

  • Developing a user friendly framework to assess and address climate risks.
  • Taking a simple approach to the complex task of evaluating the cumulative and cascading impacts of multiple climate variables.
  • Testing and refining the Framework through a pilot test in the River Murray National Park to ensure an optimal final product.
