Regional Drought Resilience Plans

The resilience of South Australian farmers and the natural environment explains how both have survived droughts and highly variable seasonal rainfall in the past.

Regional Drought Resilience Plans

Maintaining and strengthening this resilience as the climate changes is essential for the future of our regions.

URPS has led the preparation of Regional Drought Resilience Plans for Outback SA, Eyre Peninsula and Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island. This is the most of any consultancy in South Australia.

These plans identify strategies to help build drought resilience in the agricultural sector and allied industries, as well as the wider community.

URPS added value in the plans by:

  • Capturing local experience and knowledge via sensitive engagement with people who had emotional and sometimes traumatic drought experience.  Many years working in these regions meant URPS quickly gained the trust of local communities so they were able to make meaningful contributions to the plans.
  • Combining local knowledge and experience with an extensive evidence review and a best-practice resilience planning approach.
  • Capitalising on regional commonalities, but not at the expense of important distinctions between and within regions that require unique solutions.
