In recognition of the threats facing the Channels, URPS assisted Alexandrina Council to prepare a Community Coastal Flood Emergency Plan for the area. URPS placed local residents at the centre of the planning process, to ensure their voices shaped the outcomes.
“This project is an example of best practice that can be applied to other locations across the State, which will be required more and more in future as coastal communities become exposed to coastal hazard risk over time.” Coast Protection Branch, DEW.
URPS added value in the plan by:
- Empowering the community to develop and take ownership of their flood response strategies.
- Simplifying technical information into clear, easy-to-understand language to help the community fully grasp the risks and the necessary adaptation strategies.
- Engaging the SES in workshops to share emergency management best practices and involving them in the plan’s review process.
