Cool Spaces Project

The death toll from heatwaves in Australia exceeds that for any other natural disaster.

Cool Spaces Project

URPS collaborated with Campbelltown City Council to assess their community’s need for cool spaces during extreme heat. Informed by a literature review, expert interviews, and extensive community engagement, a Cool Space Action Plan and materials for a trial project were developed.

URPS supported a Cool Spaces trial during summer 2024 by creating a Communications Plan, promotional materials, delivering a staff training session, and preparing venue checklists and feedback forms.

URPS added value by:

  • Establishing a Cool Spaces Community Working Group to ensure community priorities were embedded at the heart of the project.
  • Collaborating closely with the council including co-designing the pilot project to ensure it was practical and implementable.
  • Delivering an engaging online webinar to more than 140 people from across Australia to share practical tips for establishing cool spaces.
