Preliminary images of the new Women’s and Children’s (nWCH) give the community a first look at what this world-class facility could look like. These images are based on a comprehensive Master Plan for the facility.
This new world-class hospital will be built next to the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Port Road and will include 500 treatment spaces across more than 100,000m2 of floor area.
It will also include bridges between the two hospitals, giving patients access to the helipad and adult clinical support including the Intensive Care Unit. Another notable feature is a third bridge over the rail line which will enable children and families to cross from the nWCH to the Park Lands and the hospital’s new multi-level carpark.
The nWCH will be Australia’s first all-electric hospital, helping to avoid an additional 2,178 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. This is the equivalent of taking 700 vehicles off the road. It will be entirely powered by the South Australian electrical grid – the cleanest in the country – with no reliance on gas to power heating, hot water and kitchen functions within the building.
The State Government has initiated the Riverbank Precinct Planning & Design Code Amendment. The intent of this Code Amendment is to “enable opportunities to further enhance the Riverbank as one of the State’s premier entertainment and health precincts”. This includes the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The Code Amendment will be released for public consultation soon.
